Synopsis: | This monograph focuses on black and Asian feature films and television dramas since the 1990s. It has a special emphasis on 'mainstreaming' tendencies to be observed in production and distribution, in choices of genre and subject-matter, in cultural policy and in self-definitions by black and Asian media practitioners. The book contains a chapter on earlier productions (1960s to 1980s) to illustrate continuity and change in the history of black and Asian British narrative film. Films and television dramas discussed in the case-study section are: "Young Soul Rebels", "Babymother", "Rage", "Wild West", "Brothers in Trouble", "My Son the Fanatic", "East is East", "Bhaji on the Beach", "Bend It Like Beckham", "The Buddha of Suburbia", "White Teeth" and "The Final Passage". The historical chapter refers to the following short films and cinematic features: "Ten Bob in Winter", "Jemima and Johnny", "Pressure", "Babylon", "Burning an Illusion", "Playing Away", "A Private Enterprise", "Majdhar", "My Beautiful Laundrette" and "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid". The volume also includes three papers (by Mike Phillips, Horace Ové and Julian Henriques) and two interviews (with Gurinder Chadha and Parminder Vir). | |
