Synopsis:John Akomfrah's award-winning film essay on race and disorder in Britain looks at the historical, social and political background to racial unrest, and the reasons for the anger and disillusionment felt by many from the ethnic communities in Britain. Filmed in Handsworth (Birmingham) during and after the riots of 1985, it also uses newsreel footage and archival material, ranging from shots of colonial labour to images of Caribbean/Asian settlement.
