Synopsis: | First of two "Single Voices" compilations, consisting of monologues focussing on the lives and predicaments of four black and Asian Britons. 1. "Watching the Detective" (written by Meera Syal, directed by Shani Grewal): The main character is a female detective who investigates the private lives of young Asian women on behalf of their families. 2. "Ding Dong Merrily on High" (written by Marcus Powell, directed by Julian Henriques)): An elderly widow spends a lonely Christmas, musing about his current life, his neighbours and his career as a black performer which has come to an end. 3. "Sita/Gita" (written by Sanjeev Kholi and Donald McCleary, directed by Pratibha Parmar)): In a double role, Wadia acts in the parallel stories of a homebound Asian woman catering to the needs of her family and her 'counterpart', a seemingly self-determined night club performer. 4. "The Prince of Dalston" (written by Felix Dexter, directed by Christiana Ebohon): Nathaniel is the offspring of a prestigious African family who lives in London. He fails his exams and works as a mini-cab driver. When his parents announce their visit to Britain, he is hard pressed to make them believe their son is a well-to-do and successful Londoner. | |
