Synopsis: | Realist drama about the social pressures on the marriage between an Asian man and a white woman after the family has moved from multicultural Handsworth to a more exclusively 'white' neighbourhood in Birmingham. The film also focuses on the couple's adolescent son who has to come to terms with his parents' struggles, his own fear of racial harassment and his feelings of estrangement when faced with some facets of Asian cultural traditions. Another plotline tells the story of Nadira, a Bangladeshi woman, who comes to England to marry a recently divorced Asian Muslim. As it turns out, her legal status is seriously in question on account of her husband's earlier marriage. She is arrested and eventually deported back to Bangladesh by British immigration authorities. | |
