Synopsis: | This book is concerned with relations between social groups and their conflicts, conflicts rooted in individuals' affiliations with their groups (or their 'social identity') and the psychological processes which are responsible for the formation of groups. Topics discussed include the psychology of crowds, the psychological effects of difference in power between groups, the ways in which people's membership of various groups affects their differing views about the causes of social events, the effects of the perceived illegitimacy of existing social arrangements upon people's attitudes towards their own social group and others, the conditions in which members of certain groups become 'depersonalized' by other people and some aspects of the psychology of historical, ethnic, professional and industrial conflicts or tensions. | |
