Synopsis: | The films discussed in "Sexual Identities" are concerned with issues ranging from the place of representation in feminist film practice, particularly in relation to the experimental film strategy of "Light Reading", the representation of sexuality in "Un Chant d'Amour", the representation of race in Isaac Julien's "Territories" and questions of racism raised in "Illusions". These films refuse the conventional methodology of narrative cinema and attempt to re-work and construct new cultural meanings by presenting the 'personal' or a subjective perspective as an integral part of the work. Race, gender and sexuality are seen as facets of cultural identity which are of equal importance to, for example, class. See TABB folders: "Undercut: 'Cultural Identities'." | |
